Why I like Formula One

Day 215 / 366

I got into F1 2 years ago, after watching the Netflix series Drive to Survive. Formula One was a sport that I was aware of, but I never bothered exploring because it seemed so boring and monotonous on the outside. The fact that different teams use different cars meant that the sport was not all about the skill of the driver. If a team manages to make a faster car, they will always win, right?

Turns out, it is not as simple as that. Yes, sometimes it does get boring because one of the teams has an exceptionally fast car. Like it was last year when Redbull won all except one race. But I won’t say that the season was boring. We had an old veteran Alonso coming back in form out of nowhere and winning several podiums. We had an amazing qualification in Monaco. We had the race in Singapore where Carlos Sainz won the race by deliberately slowing down to help Norris behind him to keep Russel caught up. I know most of it would not make any sense to anyone, but trust me once you get a hang of it, it’s amazing stuff.

This year started off boring, but all of a sudden has turned into one of the most exciting F1 seasons in decades. McLaren has the fastest car now, but they somehow still find ways to lose races. Mercedes who has the 3rd fastest car has somehow won 3 races!

F1 is so much more than just fast cars going around in circles. There are strategies, different tires, different driving styles, and car setups. There’s the dynamic between teammates. And it’s definitely a sport that everyone should give a try.
