Day 227 / 365

There are not a lot of things as calming as just sitting on a beach and listening to the ocean. You could sit for hours and listen to the water, and look at the waves coming and going ever so periodically. This works so well in relaxing you that many people use apps that make these sounds to help them sleep. What is it about the ocean that has such an effect on us?

The most obvious reason is that it allows your brain to take a break. Usually, it would be bombarded with sounds and visuals that come with city life. At the beach, there is none of these. The sounds of the mighty ocean overpower any sound us puny humans could make.

And the sound can be meditative. Those who have done meditation know that many times it involves focusing your attention on something repetitive. Whether it is a chant or your breath. On in the case of the beach, its the waves. Thus listening to the waves can a lot of time bring you to a meditative state, which brings all the relaxation features of meditation with it.

We are biologically wired to respond to certain threatening noises. White noise such as the sound of the ocean drowns out most of such noises. Thus it helps a lot of people to go to sleep.
