Day 240 / 366

“At this moment, a thousand valves have opened within my brain, and I must pour forth a river of words of I shall suffocate”

My decision to read “White Nights” in order to find my love for reading again turned out to be a huge success. This 85-page novella was such a joy to read. It was written in 1848, almost 2 centuries ago, but the story still feels so fresh and relatable.

It was written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, originally in Russian. But the English translation is still superb. It is short in length but still packs so many powerful quotes.

“How can you live and have no story to tell?”

Russian literature can be hard to get into for some, and that included me. But I think this is a great entry point into Dostoevsky’s work. Maybe someday I will make it through “Crime and Punishment” as well.

We discussed this book today in my book club and I want to so badly write about it here as well, but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. All I would say is that it’s scary how much I was able to relate to a character that a Russian author wrote over 200 years ago. Many of his thoughts and his experiences matched what I have gone through myself.

Just goes to show that the human experience is universal, and good stories that revolve around our core human feelings will always stand the test of time.
