Day 136 / 365

Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time. It made over 2.7 billion dollars. I knew that Avengers Endgame which came a few weeks ago has quickly risen to the second position. I wanted to check how close it was to Avatar so I went to its Wikipedia page. And there on the right-hand side, Wikipedia displays the earnings as 2.5 billion, with the label ‘Box Office’.

Now Box office is a term we have heard a lot. When a movie does well we say its a ‘Hit at the box office’. But what does this term mean? where is this “box office” everyone talks about?

What does Box Office mean

In the olden times, theaters had private seating areas known as boxes. The office that sold the tickets to these boxes was, you guessed it, the box office.

Since these were the most expensive seats, the box office sales were a good measure of how the movie (or a play ) was doing. As years went on it started being used to denote the total sales.
