What if everything that happened was for your best?
Day 58 / 365
Apart from writing one blog entry a day, another resolution for me for this year is to read one good book a week. The one I finished this week is “Zen and the Art of Happiness”. One of the first thing that the book tells us to do is to believe that everything that’s happening to you, it’s the absolute best thing that could have happened. This idea seemed extreme and illogical at first to me, but it made more and more sense the more I read the book.
Think of a situation in the past when you were worried about something. Maybe something bad happened in your life. At the time you would have cursed your bad luck. You would have been extremely anxious about the future, imagining all the negative things that might have happened to you. All this would have caused you a lot of despair.
But I can bet that whatever it was that brought you down, you would have eventually overcome it. Given enough time, you would have definitely recovered and even ended up in a much better place.
In hindsight, you might often look back at that phase in your life and smile. You would be grateful, as you recognize it was the hardships that actually made you stronger.
What if you had this realization when you were actually going through that phase? If you would have believed that all these troubles are actually for your good, you would have avoided all the despair. You would have still gone through hell, but you would have been content in the knowledge that all this is just a means to an end, to your betterment.
And that right there is the secret of happiness. Be happy. Believe that what God has in store for you, be it good or bad, is the best that can happen to you.
