Day 331 / 365

Mental Health is still a topic in India that has a lot of stigma around it. Most people are unaware of the advantage that they can get from therapy. Many don’t even know what therapy involves.

I came across this thread on twitter started by Caroline Moss. She asked people to share insights that they got from therapy. While I recommend you to check out the full thread from the link ago, here are some of the best advice that I took from it

Every behavior is a need trying to be met

The reason why it is so tough to get rid of bad habits is that each of your bad habits is actually fulfilling a need for your body. Your alcohol addiction might be fulfilling your need to feel confident and socialize. Your smoking habit might be helping you destress. So unless you find that need and figure out a healthier way to satisfy it, you can’t get rid of your bad habit.

If you don’t acknowledge an emotion you can’t get past it. Even negative ones, like envy.

People try to sweep negative emotions under the rug. They ignore it, thinking it will go away. What actually happens is that it builds up and actually gets stronger.

Stop “Shoulding” yourself

The language you use to talk to yourself can affect your state of mind. If you say “should” to yourself a lot, you end up putting yourself under unnecessary pressure. So rephrase “I should ..” to “I want ..”
