The year without summer
Day 166 / 365
People in most parts of India are fed up with the heat and can’t wait for the monsoon season to start. If you are one of these people, I bet you wished you could do away with the summer season altogether. Well if you were alive back in 1816 your wish would have been granted. In the year 1816, the temperatures all around the globe dropped so much that there wasn’t even a summer season that year. And it had bad consequences.
Why did it happen?
This temperature lowering was due to a phenomenon known as volcanic winter. In the year before, Mount Tambora had erupted, and this was the biggest volcanic eruption in more than 1000 years. The ashes from the eruption spread all over the world and eventually lowered the temperatures.
Effect on agriculture
Agriculture was hit the most due to this temperature drop, as the cold weather combined with the fog or frost from the ash killed off crops. This resulted in major food shortages all over the world.
