Day 242 / 365

The wheel is considered as one of the most influential inventions done by early human beings. You couldn’t imagine a world without it, and what started as a small tool has now found its way in almost every mechanical device that we have invented.

Why was great about us inventing the wheel? When most of our inventions are driven by what we observe in nature. We saw tree trunks floating on water and that helped us invent boats. We saw the birds and were motivated to invent human flight. The wheel, on the other hand, doesn’t appear anywhere in nature. In the truest sense, it’s totally homo sapien.

What’s interesting is that while the wheels were most popularly used as a means of transportation, that was not the purpose for which they were first invented. We have evidence that wheels were first used as pottery wheels way back in 3500 B.C. This is almost 300 years before they began to be used in chariots.
