The power to choose

Day 346 / 365

The ability to choose cannot be taken away or given away. It can only be forgotten

There is only one way to take control back over your life, and that is to exercise your right to choose. To choose what job you want to do, who you want to hang out with, where you want to live.

People can take away your choices, but they can never take away your power to choose. Even in the face of problems, you get to choose whether to give a shit or not. You get to choose whether someone’s mean words will ruin your day or not.

But it is easy for someone to forget they have this power. I talked about this in one of my blogs about learned helplessness. After someone has experienced trauma and failure, they sometimes stop believing that they can do anything to change their circumstances. So they stop even trying. This is why some people think that their efforts at work don’t matter, so they stop trying to get better.

Stop doing things cause you ‘have’ to. Make it a point to only do things that you ‘choose’ to do. If you don’t plan your life, someone else is going to plan it for you. When you give up your power to choose, you give someone else explicit permission to run your life.
