The Million Dollar Homepage
Day 186 / 365
I’ve always wanted to start my own business, but like many others, I too am struggling to find an idea. That one unique and different idea that would make me a millionaire. Sometimes we think of ideas but dismiss them for being too stupid or unrealistic. This blog post is about one such idea, one that actually worked.
In 2005, Alex Tew was a 21-year-old student, and he needed to make some money to fund his college education when he had a crazy idea. He thought of making a website, which would be just a single page of size 1000 X 1000 pixels. Thus the website would have a million pixels in total, and he would sell space on this page to advertisers. The price is simple, 1 $ per pixel. Thus he could potentially make a million dollars, although he didn’t even remotely hope that.
And the page didn’t take off right away. Tews first customers were just friends and family. But the page started to gain popularity when some news sites covered it. Within a month one-fourth of the pixels were gone and Tew had made over 250,000$! within the next few months, the remaining pixels were gone as well. The last 1000 pixels had to be auctioned on eBay because there was so much demand.
That website is still up to this date, you can check it out here — http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/
