The M4 Mac Mini
Day 321 / 366
In my opinion, MacBooks are the perfect machines for developers. You get the flexibility of Linux combined with an awesome UI. On top of that, you get nice Apple build quality.
I know that people say Macs are costly. But they are value for money in the long run. My current MacBook is a 2019 16-inch Intel Macbook Pro. I have been using it for almost 5 years now and it has never let me down. It has run every single thing that I have thrown at it and has never broken down or stopped working.
While it still works quite well, I think it is time for me to upgrade. Purely because since then Apple has been coming out with some crazy hardware. With Apple Silicon, Apple started shifting from intel CPUs to their own chips. And they have been revolutionary, to say the least.
While the most logical switch for me would be the latest MacBook Pro, with the specs that I want though, it would cost me around 4 lakhs. Whereas I can get the brand new Mac Mini with the M4 chip for just 59K.
I have been hearing some great things about the M4 Mac mini. At 5 x 5 inches, it is really small. But unlike previous base models, this one comes with 16 gigs of RAM. It is probably the most value-for-money computer that Apple has ever created.
The downside of a Mac mini is that it’s just a CPU. You have to get your own Monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. But that is not an issue for me as I already have all of that setup in both my home as well as my office. Hell, I even have a set of peripherals in Jabalpur. So for 99% of the use cases, a Mac Mini would work fine for me.
The other con is that the Mac mini doesn't have a battery. It always needs to be connected to a power outlet to work. But I think that would be very rare, and in cases like that, I can always use my iPad Pro to work.
In conclusion, I think that the M4 Mac Mini is awesome, and anyone looking to buy a new computer should definitely consider it.
