Day 115 / 365

workers smashing the machines in factories

As science progresses and gives us new and impressive technologies, we’ll always have the nay-sayers who will oppose it. Just like we have people now who say that mobiles and computers are spoiling the youth today, and things were great back in the day when they had no internet.

People opposing technological advancements is not a new thing. The beginning of the 19th century this took the form of an extreme revolution.

The Luddite Uprising

The 1800s saw the Industrial Revolution. Machines began to be used in Textile mills and factories which threatened the jobs of skilled workers as there jobs could now be done by cheap and unskilled workers.

The Luddite movement began in Nottingham in England and soon spread to the entire nation. Luddites were people who protested against machinery and even going as far as saying that the use of automated machinery in factories was “Fraudulent and deceitful”.

As a protest, these people resorted to smashing the machines in mills and factories. Some factory owners had to shoot down the protesters. The military had to be used to suppress the movement.
