Day 192 / 366

Today on Twitter I came across a video where a 30-year-old guy and his 60-year-old son ended their lives by jumping in front of a local train. Over the last few months, I have been coming across lots of stories of people killing themselves, both on the news and from people that I know. It’s astonishing to think of what these people must have been going through in their lives that forced them to take such a drastic step.

When I was young, I did not understand suicide at all. Surely there must be a solution to every problem, I used to think. It’s only after going through some rough times of my own, and by talking to other people who have had it hard in life that I have come to realize how tough it sometimes gets just to exist.

People don’t ask for help, because they think that they cannot be helped. They absolutely believe that there is no way out of the mess that they are in. Hence they choose to end it all. And I know people like to think of this as being weak, as them not thinking about others, their family especially. What they don’t realize is that it’s probably the thought of their family and their loved ones that has kept them going so far. But at some point, even that’s not enough.

I don’t know what the solution for this could be, but I definitely think that talking to people and discussing your problems helps. If you are not comfortable talking to someone you know, you should seek professional help. We need to get rid of the stigma around mental health, and going to therapy. Or we would keep losing lives that could have been saved.
