The importance of routine
Day 97 / 365
As kids, we were all expected to follow a certain routine by our parents. We had a fixed time to go to bed and to wake up. Schools ensured we followed a time table for studying. And our moms ensured we got a balanced diet to eat.
Once we move out and start living off our own, all of that goes out of the window. We eat what we like, stay up till whenever we feel like, and wake up only when we absolutely have to.
The idea of having a fixed routine might seem like too much work for most of us in our 20s. But there’s more than enough reasons why we should do it.
It increases our efficiency
When you have a good routine, you save a lot of time making decisions. You know the tasks you would be doing throughout the day, and as they are routine you would have an idea about the time they would take as well. Planning your days and your weekends becomes much easier. You know what activities to do and what to say no to.
It helps you make good habits and break old ones
There’s only one key for developing good habits, and that’s repetition. And that can come only if you have a good routine in your life. Take exercising for example. If you run 4–5 kms every few days when you just feel like it, you would not benefit as much. A better way would be to make it a point to run a km every day. Consistency is key
And the same goes for breaking bad habits. If you have a fixed time to wake up, you will never miss breakfast again. And it doesn’t mean waking up super early. Just figure out a time that works for you and stick to it.
So take some time out asap and add some routine to your life. A great place to start would be a morning routine.
- Fix a time to wake up
- Set aside 10 minutes for some light exercise or meditation
- Make sure you don’t miss breakfast. Have multiple options ready.
Remember to start small. It’s not as important to do more, just as long as you do it regularly.
