The end of an era

Day 191 / 365

I was never into cricket when I was a child. I didn’t know any of the players except Sachin and Ganguly, wasn’t even familiar with all the rules, to be honest. The first match that I ever watched was the 2007 World Cup match against Bangladesh. As you might remember, India lost that match. Everyone else in the house went to sleep way before the match had ended, but I kept watching till the end, maybe too naive to know it was a lost cause.

Flash forward to today, the Semifinal against New Zealand. 31 to get off the last two over with Dhoni on strike. Dhoni hit a six but then got out. And I turned the match off, probably for the last time.

I wasn’t around for the Sachin era, so never understood the fandom. Cricket for me has been synonymous with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and I am very glad about that.

Four years from now a young Indian team would be all riled up, trying to win back the cup for the country. There will hardly be a face I recognize, probably a Kohli close to retirement, or Pant who probably would’ve sealed the number 4 spot by then. Would I be as excited about it? I doubt it.
