Songs that made me
Day 279 / 366
Songs are a very important part of my life. I have songs for places, songs for different phases of my life, and songs that I attach to different people in my life as well. I have songs I listen to when I want to feel happy and those that I listen to when I want to be sad. There are songs that give me hope and songs that pump me up when I need motivation.
Each and every song in my playlist has a story attached to it. Maybe it was a song that I heard in a TV series. Or maybe it was a song I heard at a bar when I was high as a kite. But my best ones are the songs that get recommended to me by other people. I love asking people what their favourite songs are. I love listening to their stories about why they love those songs as well. The people might leave, but the songs will remain.
I cherish these songs a lot, I protect them. I make sure not to hear them too often so that they don’t lose that meaning. I want that even if years from now if I want to get transported back to a certain moment in life, all I have to do is listen to that one song and close my eyes.
It’s funny how your opinion of a song changes with time as well. Before this year, when I thought of Tame Impala, the song that came to mind was “Feels like I only go backwards”. I used to always see another one of their songs in the recommendations, but I never played it. I prejudged that it would not be a good song. It was only after I started hearing this song played a lot in my office that I fell in love with it. And for me, it would be the song that I remember when I think back to how the year 2024 was for me —
I was doin’ fine without you
’Til I saw your eyes turn away from mine
Oh, sweet darling, where he wants you
Said, “Come on Superman, say your stupid line”
