Simple Living

Reddit is a great place to waste time. But if you use it right, it is also a good way to find people with a different point of view. For instance, there’s a subreddit that I follow called r/SimpleLiving

The people in the subreddit believe that most of the things that people worry about in our modern busy lives are worthless, i.e. they are not essential to lead a happy life. In their opinion, if you wanna be happy, just keep it simple.

One of the post that made me interested in this subreddit was a story about a small fisherman and an MBA student. It went something like this.

An MBA student saw a fisherman resting on the side of the ocean. He approached him and enquired -

Student — Why are you not out in the water catching fish?

Fisherman — I have already caught enough for the day, so I don’t need to anymore.

Student — But if you go and catch some more, you could make some extra money today.

Fisherman — And what would that get me?

Student — Well if you save all the extra cash, in a few months you will be able to buy a bigger boat and catch even more fish every day.

Fisherman — And what would that get me?

Student — With the extra revenue, you could hire some workers to catch the fish for you?

Fisherman — And then what?

Student — Then you wouldn’t have to work at all, you could sit by the ocean and relax.

Fisherman — Isn’t that what I’m doing already?

We work all week so that we can make money to enjoy our weekends. We need to spend that money on the weekends to enjoy and make ourselves forget the stresses buildup during the week and to prepare ourselves to work the next week. We need to work all next week to make money to enjoy our weekends ….
