Rangoli
Day 300 / 365
It’s the 300th blog today, and it’s Diwali! I guess it’s as good a time as any to take a day off from learning and write about something fun. And what’s more fun this time of the year than rangolis.
My aunt used to make rangoli at my house on the day of Diwali, and later my Didi took over. Now rangolis in India are traditionally beautiful symmetric patterns with leaves and flowers, occasionally with a sketch of a diety such as lord Ganesh. I was the last person you would think would make one of those. I was OK at drawing, but could never make a symmetric pattern or a flower to save my life. Let alone doing that with colored powders.
It was 2008 when India won the T20 world cup that I made my first rangoli. It was anything but a ‘traditional’ rangoli, it had the waving flag of India and in front of it the world cup trophy. It was sloppy, and but it turned out fine. And since then I have tried to make a rangoli on each Diwali.
I don’t have pictures of all of them, but here are a few I could find-
This was 2010, and it’s supposed to represent global warming. At the bottom of it, I had written: “Global warming is so uncool”. I have no clue why I did this.
This was 2013, I was into robotics in college at the time, hence this rangoli. I think this might be the best one I have ever done.
This is 2016. Of Course, I would have to have made at least one Pokemon rangoli. And I can assure you this wouldn’t be the last one.
This was last year when I was crazy about Avengers Infinity Wars. It’s ironic that (Spoiler Alert!) Iron man died in the next movie.
This year it was tough to come up with ideas, but I took a friend’s suggestion and drew the Chandrayaan Rangoli you see at the top of this post!
So that is it for my Rangoli Recap. Have a happy and safe Diwali Everyone!
