Day 55 / 365

Meditations is a series of 12 books written by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, about 2000 years ago. Marcus never intended to publish his writings, which is why they don’t have an official title. “Meditations” was a title assigned to the books later on.

Marcus was a stoic philosopher, and that’s the central theme for his writings. It’s a compilation of thoughts and wisdom, meant for him to meditate upon.

The best part is, the book is free for anyone to read. You can find a pdf version here.

Here are a few quotes from the book that might encourage you to go read it-

Either pain affects the body (which is the body’s problem) or it affects the soul. But the soul can choose not to be affected, preserving its own serenity, its own tranquility. All our decisions, urges, desires and aversions lie within.

One of the main teachings of stoicism is that the reason for our sufferings is internal. We can’t control the external circumstances, but we can control how we react to them.

“You have power over your mind; not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

“Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.”

He also teaches us to be good to others, even our enemies.

“If any man despises me, it is his problem. My only concern is not doing or saying anything deserving of contempt.”

“No matter what anyone says or does, my task is to be good.”

Quotes like these are what inspired me to start reading Meditations, and I hope they inspire others as well.
