Patience
Day 351 / 365
“Patience is not the ability to wait but how you act while you are waiting.”
Sometimes the best things in life are not delivered instantly. You won’t get your dream job by giving just one interview. You won’t become a great guitar player with just a day’s practice. As they say, good things come to those who wait.
But in today’s time of instant everything — From noodles to messaging, I think patience is a forgotten virtue. It’s not a very attractive virtue either. You hear a lot about hard-working employees or students. Not so much about the patient ones. On the contrary, it’s mostly the impatient people that grab all the attention.
Yet, patience is essential to lead a happy life. I think it’s the ultimate quality in a stoic. No matter what is happening around you, you can exercise patience and stay come. If you do so, things would generally find a way of working out for you. Even if they don’t, at least you have your sanity intact.
“I take things as they come and find that patience and persistence tend to win out in the end.” — Paul Kane
If you are not so good at being patient, it’s never too late to get started. You would get a lot of chances to practice it, especially if you are living in a big city and doing a corporate 9–5 job. When you are stuck in traffic, or in a long queue at the supermarket, or being yelled at by your boss, remember this quote from Mahatma Gandhi-
“To lose patience is to lose the battle.”
