Our needs to consume

It’s been a while since I have been at my home for this long a period of time. I have been noticing a lot of things that are missing here, stuff like electrical appliances, storage boxes, decorative stuff. But when I suggest buying these things online, I always face a bit of resistance from my parents. In their opinion, they simply have no use for all that stuff. For instance, They don’t need a vacuum cleaner as the broom works just fine.

I think our generation as a whole has been buying a lot more stuff than ever before. Maybe it’s because of the convenience of online shopping, or maybe it’s because of the social media influencers making us believe that we need to buy the right stuff to make our lives better.

Things used to last a lot longer in the past. And they used to be self-sufficient. If you bought a phone, you got a charger, a pair of earphones, and everything else that you needed. Gone are the days when people could just open up their cars, find the faulty part, and just replace it. In fact, Apple is trying it’s best to make it tougher for you to repair something yourselves, or by a third-party repair guy.

It should not come as a shock to anyone though. Just like social media sites want us to keep scrolling, the big corporations want us to keep shopping. It would be stupid to believe that any step they are taking is for the benefit of the customer or the environment or some bullshit like that.
