Day 114 / 365

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you read the word ‘Orange’? Do you think of the colour or the Fruit?

‘Orange’ is quite an interesting word. It’s infamous for the fact that no other words rhymes with it (which is not entirely true. The only word that does perfectly rhyme with orange is sporange).

Orange can refer to the colour or the fruit. But what came first? Did we start calling the fruit orange because of its colour, or did we named the colour after the fruit?

The latter is actually true. Before the english speaking world knew about the fruit, the colour was actually known as “red-yellow” or “yellow-red”. Later the colour was named after the fruit.

From old Indian languages we had -> Narang

This was picked up by Persians and changed to -> Naranj

And in Europe this became -> Norange

Finally with English A Norange became An Orange!
