New Beginnings

Day 344 / 365

There’s little more in this world that I love more than a clean slate, a fresh start. A new project to put all your energy into. A chance to leave behind all the past mistakes, and a resolution to myself to not repeat them again. Everyone gets excited about new beginnings. That’s why the new year, or your birthday, or the start of a new semester at college feels so good. You are filled with loads of motivation.

Behind every exciting new project, there is a not-quiet-finished project that you are leaving behind. Back in the day, this ex-project of yours might have started out as an exciting venture as well. But somewhere down the line, you lost focus, and it grew into a monstrosity that you hated. You couldn’t wait to just get it over with and start something new.

This is where most of us go wrong. It is important to finish what you start, or at least leave it in a position that someone else can easily take it over from you. There are several reasons for this, but the biggest reason which I feel is just the sheer guilt that comes with it. The shoddy work that you did to just get it over with, will always stay somewhere in the back of your mind and come back to haunt you regularly.

“Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task.”

And apart from that, another obvious reason is not to burn any bridges. If you are switching jobs and leave from your previous job with loads of unfinished projects, you will leave a lot of people pissed. It’s a small world, you don’t know whose help you might need in the future. So it’s best to leave on good terms.
