Never skip twice
Day 169 / 365
Well, I almost missed writing a blog post for the day. Good thing I remembered and didn’t. But what would have happened had I have skipped it?
So a book that I finished recently, Atomic Habits, had a great tip about what to do when you skip a certain new habit you are trying to develop. No matter what habit you chose, you will fail to do it one day or another. Because that’s only Human. So skipping is not the issue. The issue is what you do the day after.
What the book taught me is that it’s OK if you skip once, but never skip twice. Skipping a day is normal, and expected. But if you skip twice, it then starts contributing towards the formation of a different habit, a bad one. Soon enough you might skip 3–4 days in a row, and you will then find yourself lacking in the motivation to start again.
So if you decide to meditate daily, or brush your teeth before you go to bed, or maybe write a blog entry each day, be prepared that there will be times when you will not be able to do that thing. But when you do skip a day, make sure you make extra efforts the next day to continute your habit. Just forget about the skipped day and move on.
So that’s what I’ll do if I ever have to skip a day in this challenge. So I’ll write 364 entries instead of 365, still pretty remarkable!
