Navratri
Day 275 / 365
Navaratri means different things to different people. Too many devotees this festival means the Nine-day fasting and the spirituality associated with that. As a kid, to me, it meant going out all night with my family and looking at all the beautiful Durga statues around the city. And the “Falahar” was amazing as well!
While this Autumn Navaratri is the most celebrated one, there are actually four Navaratris a year, according to ancient Hindu Texts
- Sharad Navaratri
- Vasanta Navaratri
- Magha Navaratri:
- Ashada Navaratri
The one we are celebrating right now is the Sharad Navaratri.
What does Navaratri signify?
The festival is associated with the battle between Durga and the demon Mahishasur. Mahishasur was granted immortality by Lord Brahma. The only condition was that he could be killed only by a woman. When he attached the Earth, heaven, and hell, no one could defeat him. Even the gods were helpless.
Lord Vishnu created Durga, and Brahma and Shiva gave her their powers. Durga fought Mahishasur for 15 days, but she finally defeated him.
Durga has 9 Avatars, and each day in Navaratri is associated with one of these Avatars.
