Mac Vs. PC

Day 271 / 366

When I started using computers, the OS I used was Windows. It was the most popular OS around, mostly because you could play a lot of games on it.

When I moved to college, I would see CS students using Ubuntu instead on their laptops. And I used to think how stupid it was. They did everything on their terminals, they had no games and the UI was shitty as well. My opinion was that it’s not actually that good and that they are using Ubuntu just to be pretentious. And so even after I started coding, I continued using Windows.

Switching to Ubuntu later was a huge revelation. I soon realised how convenient and fast it was to use the terminal instead of the GUI. And setting up development environments was so much easier. I had both Ubuntu and Windows on my laptop but I found myself using Windows less and less.

By the time I reached my 4th year, I had started making some money doing freelance projects. I am not sure why, but in 2016 I decided to use all the money that I had saved to buy a Macbook Pro. I had never used a Mac before, but I had seen how most software companies, especially startups provided MacBooks to their employees. All my friends thought that I was stupid, but in hindsight, that was the best decision I could have made.

MacOS gives you the best of both worlds. Since it is Unix-based, you get the same command line features that you get with Ubuntu. And you get a GUI that is as good as Windows, if not better. This is why I keep suggesting to devs that they should switch to a MacBook.
