Linger

Day 110 / 366

It’s been a long time since I came across a song that just struck a chord with me and made me fall in love with it. But it happened this morning when I heard this song on a 6-second reel

But I’m in so deep
You know I’m such a fool for you
You’ve got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger?

And I had to find it and listen to the whole song. The version I heard, the one linked at the top is a cover done recently by a music duo known as Royel Otis. And the original song, by The Cranberries, came out in 1993. It’s a strange coincidence that most of the songs and movies that I love came out right around the time that I was born.

I love the cover, and I love the original version. I usually don’t listen to a song more than once a day, as I don’t want to get bored of it. But this one I must have heard a dozen times already. In fact it's playing right now as I am writing this blog.

I’m not sure why I love this song so much. Maybe it’s the lyrics, maybe it's the tune. Maybe it’s how amazing the voice of the singer is in the cover version.

It’s crazy that the singer Dolores wrote the song when she was just 21. It was about her first break up, how her 17-year-old ex who was in the army used to write her love letters even after they had broken up. Linger here refers to the lingering feelings they still had for each other, about a love that they knew was impossible.

To me though, this song will forever be linked to the day I spent in my new office today, the last time that it will be empty before I have some new teammates join me on Monday. It’s the last of the days where I am doubtful about taking this big step, scared but still excited.

If you, if you could get by
Trying not to lie
Things wouldn’t be so confused
And I wouldn’t feel so used
But you always really knew
I just want to be with you
