Life without the moon
Day 263 / 365
The moon is not just there to make the night’s sky look pretty. It plays a huge role in our lives. Like most things though, sometimes you realize their importance only when they are gone. So what would happen if the earth had no moon?
The most obvious effect would be tidal changes. We know that it’s the gravitational pull of the moon that causes the high and low tides. But if the moon wasn’t there, the tides in our oceans would be 3 times higher! This is because, without the moon, the sun would take charge of the tides.
Also, the moon also affects the speed of the earth. If you are spinning and your arms are spread out, you would spin slower as compared to if you bring your arms to your torso. In the same way, as the moon moves away from the earth, the earth’s rotation speed decreases.
If there was no moon, the earth would rotate so fast that a day would last just 6 hours! That is a 4 times increase in speed. And that would mean increased wind speeds and storms as well.
Without the moon, it would be totally different earth, and we might not have been here.
