Is Ignorance Bliss?

I used to use twitter passively a lot to get my news. It wasn’t anything major, mostly stuff like hows the traffic in the city, is it raining a lot, what other people think about the latest GOT episode and so on.

But just like a frog in a pot of boiling water, I realize now that I have slowly become addicted to it. These days I find myself spending a lot of time just refreshing the latest trending tweets. And the problem is that most of them are about something negative.

With the globalization that we have now thanks to the internet, everyone finds out about everything instantaneously. Take the plane crash in Iran for instance, people found out about that through twitter even before the news channel started airing it. Is that a good thing? Are we supposed to know and care about each and everything that is going wrong with the world right now?

Just in the past week or so, we have the CAA-NRC protests, the bombings by the USA in Iran, the retaliation by Iran, the plane crash, the JNU attacks, the fires in Australia killing millions and millions of animals. No wonder everyone’s so depressed.

Are the number of bad things really increasing in the world? or are just aware of more things now. I seriously think its the latter. And I am positive that each one of us worrying about all the issues is not going to help.

So I would second the suggestion that Hasan Minaj made in the last episode of his show “Patriot Act”. Just pick a couple of issues that you are passionate about, and put all your energies towards those. Don’t be so hard on yourself if you choose to ignore a few issues. There will be others that would passionately take care of those.
