If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands

If you are over 20 years old, and you have a job, I think I can safely guess that you aren’t particularly happy at this very moment. It’s a sad truth, but that is the world we live in right now, especially in 2020. People just aren’t happy. But unlike most people, I don’t refrain from talking about it.

What was the last good news that you heard? something that made you smile. When everything in the world felt right, for just a moment. How long did that feeling last?

I know that life is supposed to be filled with ups and downs. Somethings will make you happy, while others will make you sad. The problem is that for something to make you genuinely happy, it would have to be something really huge. Whereas little annoying things are quite good at bringing you down every now and then.

If your internet stops working for an hour, you will be super pissed. It will ruin your whole day. But the fact that it was working flawlessly for the past year wouldn’t make you smile. Your food being delivered on time gets a ‘Meh’ response from you. But god forbid if it gets delayed by 5 minutes, and you’ll go on a rant throwing curses at the restaurant.

There’s isn’t much you can do about it though. Our brains are just wired to work like this. Maybe it’s some cavemen instinct, to only watch out for bad stuff. I can give the cliched response and say that you should start focusing on the little things in life that are good, blah blah. But trust me that gets old pretty soon.

But at least you can be aware of this. The next time you are mad at some little thing, maybe you’ll remember this blog and realize that you are probably overreacting.
