Day 159 / 365

What are the fondest memories of your childhood? It might be a lot of things, ranging from the time spent with friends or the great food that your mom used to cook. But I’m sure a big part of all of our childhoods would be the cartoons we watched as well. Those were the days, back when cartoon network used to be good!

One of my favorites would have to be Bugs Bunny, who was a part of a larger group of cartoon shows under the banner “Looney Tunes”.

Yes, you read that right, it’s not a typo. It’s Looney Tunes, not Looney Toons. Before today even I used to think that it was toons. It has to be right, it’s a show about cartoons that are looney. But I checked online, and it has always been Looney Tunes, and there’s a nice story behind that name.

Back in the 1930s, Warner Bros. had a big music catalog that they wanted to promote. So they had the idea of creating short animated series that they could use as a medium to push that music. This is where they came up with series like Silly Symphonies, Merry Melodies, and of course the best one — Looney Tunes! The rest is history. This little side project soon became the most popular web series. Not only was it popular among the audience, it got nominated for the Oscars several times, even winning two of them.

I sometimes get amazed when I see children now still watching Pokemon passionately, a show that shaped my childhood. It’s amazing that it can still stay relevant 15–20 years later. But when you think of cartoons like Mickey Mouse and Looney Tunes, they are almost a decade old now!
