Good news about the ozone layer
Day 182 / 365
People from my age group would remember studying about the ozone layer, and how our carelessness was causing big holes in it, and how that would affect the future generations. Many steps were taken to prevent and fix this, and the good news is that it’s working!
Why we need the ozone layer?
The ozone layer prevents us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. When exposed to these rays, we have an increased chance of developing skin cancer, which is why we see so many sunscreens made to protect us against these.
Why was it depleting?
Certain chemicals and gases known as CFCs (Cloro Fluro Carbons) were the major cause of the damage done to the ozone layer. These were being generated during the manufacturing of Refrigerators, Air Conditioners, and aerosol cans.
In 1985, substantial evidence was found for the depletion of the ozone layer, and by 1987 many countries worldwide signed an agreement to gradually stop the production of these chemicals.
About 3 decades later, we are seeing signs of healing in the ozone layer, and if the trend continues, it should be fully fixed by 2060.
While there’s still lots of bad stuff we are doing to the environment as a species, it’s good to know there are some positives to look at as well. Let’s hope this encourages people to take similar steps to fix global warming as well!
