Elon Vs. OpenAI
Day 66 / 366
Recently Elon Musk sued OpenAI. The reason was that Elon was an early investor and supporter of OpenAI, to keep AI research open and accessible to all. OpenAI, when Elon was involved in it was a non-profit organisation. But later with the success of ChatGPT, OpenAI turned closed and for-profit. With Microsoft’s money, Elon suggests that OpenAI went against what they had promised — To get the leading AI into everyone's hands, not in a few big organizations.
OpenAI came out with a blog post today refuting the claims made by Elon. You can read the whole blog post here -
OpenAI suggests that around 2018 Elon himself was supportive of going for-profit. But Elon wanted them to become a part of Tesla. And he wanted a controlling stake as well.
They have also attached email conversations with Elon Musk as proof of this.
What I found interesting was their reasoning for not fully open-source AGI technology. They reckon that such a tech would be too powerful to be made open, as it can be used for harmful purposes as well. Their modified goal is to keep the benefits of AI open to all, without sharing the actual science or tech behind it.
