Doomsday rule
Day 62 / 365
Today I came across a great way to quickly figure out what day of the week a particular date is going to be. It’s called the Doomsday rule. And it’s based on the following fact -
For any given year, the dates 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12 and the last day of February will always fall on the same day of the week.
This day is known as the ‘Doomsday’ for that year. If you know the Doomsday for a year, finding the day for any other date for that year becomes a bit easier.
For example, let’s try to find what day will Christmas fall on this year. The Doomsday for 2019 is Thursday. So that means that 12/12 or the 12th of December would be a Thursday. This means that 2 weeks (14 days) after that, 26th of December would be a Thursday as well. So Christmas, which is the 25th of December will be a Wednesday.
There are also steps through which you can find out what the Doomsday of any given year, but I think for most cases you can get by, by just remembering what the doomsday for the current year is. Also, the doomsday for consecutive years can be easily found out. Since Doomsday for 2019 is Thursday, we know that for 2018 it must have been a Wednesday.
