Day 104 / 265

Dolphins are extremely intelligent creatures. They have excellent eyesight and hearing as well, and they can even use echos to locate objects in their surroundings. They can even put only half of their brain to sleep at a time.

All that sounds great, but it still came as a surprise to me when I found out that the dolphins are trained for use in the military as well!

Military Dolphins

US and Soviet Union were the first to train dolphins for their armies.

The most obvious use is to locate underwater mines, which dolphins are extremely good at because of their echolocation abilities.

During the 1960s US actually conducted tests to see which marine animals could be best for such jobs. Over 19 species were tested out of which the bottlenose dolphin came out on top.

Dolphins also help in finding and retrieving lost swimmers. In fact, dolphins have contributed to saving more lives in open water then specially trained lifesavers.
