Digging yourself a hole

Have you ever thought about what working out actually is? You put your body through immense load and pain, in order to make it stronger. Your muscles actually are broken apart and rebuild. You put yourself through a lot of trouble, but as a result of it, you become better.

Something similar happens when you start playing the guitar. At first, your fingertips will hurt a lot from constantly pressing the strings. But your teacher will advise you to keep going. Soon the skin on the tips will start wearing off, and the pain would increase as well. But if you still keep going, eventually the soft wore off skin is replaced by new harder skin which is immune to feeling any pain from pressing on the strings!

I like to use this philosophy in other areas of my life as well. Whether it is taking up work in a field which I haven’t worked in before, or committing to an insanely tight deadline. I believe that every now and then, you need to give yourself a challenge, something that puts you in a lot of shit. Then, you will be forced to improvise, work hard, and fix things. The struggle will surely make you better.

You need to dig a hole for yourself, and just get in it. It will be scary at first, and there will be no obvious way out. But just have faith in yourself. You’ll find your way out of that hole, and you’ll struggle your way into a better life.
