Day 349 / 366

After SORA by OpenAI, we have another much-awaited AI tool that has finally launched. It’s Devin AI, the AI programmer.

While many said that AI will not replace coders, only coders who use AI will replace those who don’t. But the people who made Devin have different ideas, as they set out to make straight-up replacements for coders.

Devin uses the AI agents to finish tasks that a junior dev can do. It can write code, run it, browse the internet to look at documentation, and even push code to GitHub and create pull requests.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t try this one as well. There is no free version, and while I am ok with paying as well, the price of hiring Devin right now is 500$ per month.

There are people who did try it and posted their reviews on YouTube. Based on those I see that it is not entirely a scam. It is a legit product that has actual use cases. You communicate with it through Slack, so just like any other developer in your team, you can just tag Devin on Slack and ask it to do stuff. It will create PRs, and even make changes based on your comments. But like any other AI application, it hallucinates. It only does things around 80–90% correctly, and you need a senior dev to review its changes and finish the rest.

Let’s see where it goes from here. Will companies start hiring Devin to work instead of freshers?
