Day 256 / 366

I am sure I would have written about deep work in the past, but I feel the need to revisit it today. At my company, our focus right now is to increase our efficiency. We are trying to find ways we can get more stuff done in less time. And Deep Work is one way to do it.

Deep Work is a concept mentioned in the book with the same title by Cal Newport.

In the book, the author talks about how you can get more things done in less time if you increase your focus and remove all distractions. This means no music, no phone, no talking to other people. Just you focused on the task at hand.

When I used to follow this practice back in college, I had a spreadsheet that I used to track the number of deep work hours I was able to get each day. And you will be surprised how tough it is to do. We are used to having so many distractions in our lives now that we don’t even realize them.

I plan to have deep work booths in my office someday. These will be spaces where people can go to be away from distractions and work on their tasks with full focus.

When you are running behind on your work, there are two ways to deal with it. Either you put in more hours, or you somehow get more things done in the same amount of hours. I prefer the latter.
