Consuming Content

Day 201 / 366

After a long time today, I got some free time, so I decided to watch the new episode of a TV series that had been on my watchlist for a long time. While it was fun, I found it hard to just sit for an hour while watching it and do nothing. This made me realize how much my content-consuming habits have changed recently.

These days I consume audio content much more than video, and the reason is simple. I don't have a lot of free time, and audio content can be consumed while multitasking. I usually listen to podcasts or old radio shows while I am working. Watching a TV show on the other hand requires an amount of attention that I just can’t give while also working on some tasks. Hence I slowly stopped watching movies or TV Series altogether.

The same thing happened with reading. It is impossible to multi-task when you are reading. Some people are able to listen to songs while they read, I can’t even do that. Hence lately, I have not been reading that much.

Audio content is good, but it's passive. It’s something to have on in the background. It’s hard to get anything out of it. On the other hand, movies or tv shows, or documentaries can often add something to your life. Books can definitely do that. All of them are not just a way to pass time, they can also be a way to learn new facts and new ways of thinking. This is something that I have been missing a lot.

As always though, this is just a phase. I am sure one the workload settles down I will be able to take some time out to watch a movie or read a book every now and then.
