Communication is key

Day 116 / 366

So many movie plots would just crumble if one of the characters would just make a call and explain what's going on to someone. Most of the fights in movies are due to some or the other misunderstandings, and as the audience, we sometimes find it ridiculous. But in real life as well, I think we are just as bad at communicating.

Last night I was woken up by a message from a client who was slightly unhappy with my work for the past few weeks. And my first instinct was to just put my phone on silent and ignore the message. I hate confrontation, and I was afraid that whatever I said to them, the response would just be more negative. I tried to just ignore it and go to sleep but I couldn’t. I knew that all I was doing was postpone a conversation that I did not want to have.

Eventually, I decided to draft an honest response explaining my side of things and just send it. Even if the response is negative, I know I have to face it now or later, so better face it now and sleep in peace.

As it always happens, my response neutralized the situation and made sure that me and the client were on the same page. And I could sleep in peace.

I know that sometimes conversations are tough, but more often than not it will be beneficial to have them. delusion is not always the solution. You cannot just wish all of your troubles away.
