An Inner Monologue

Day 74 / 366

Everyone has a voice in their head, right? At least that is what I used to think until I came across this thread on Twitter

By Inner monologue, I mean the ability to hear your thoughts in your head. For instance, as I am writing this blog, I am hearing these sentences first in my head. I think about what to write, and the thought has a voice, and then I write it down. It’s crazy to think that there are people that do not have this voice in their head.

The same guy also interviewed his friend who is one such person.

Some of the things that I found interesting

  • When she reads something, she does not hear it in her head.
  • If she has to talk to herself, she literally says things out loud to herself.
  • When she dreams, it's all just visual. There is no dialogue.
  • To her, sentences have a particular “shape”.

I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I sometimes do wish that I could shut this voice inside my head when it's feeding me negative thoughts. But then again, this is the same voice that has motivated me when I have been at my lowest as well.

It’s just fascinating how unique the human experience is for each one of us.
