Always Be Closing

Day 277 / 365

Another great mantra that I got from Casey Neistat is this — “Always be closing”. He got this from the Alec Baldwin movie Glengarry Glen Ross.

Casey has this phrase tattooed on his arm. That should tell you how much it means to him. According to him, if he starts a task or project, the worst thing he can do is not complete it. Always be closing, means no matter what task you pick up, see it through till the end.

I relate to this a lot as well. A brand new project is always exciting. You get a blank slate you have a lot of time to experiment and make mistakes. Everyone is at peak enthusiasm at the beginning of the project.

But the last mile is always the toughest. As you reach the end of the project, you are tired, you are pressured by deadlines. No one’s even close to excited. They just want to be done with it and move one. And many times we do move on, even it a project is just 80% done.

“Always be closing” is actually a Sales mantra. It means that you should always be looking to close the deal because if you are not able to do that, then all the effort you put in would be for nothing. You should see your projects, whether it’s work or personal, the same way. If you don’t want to see it through to 100% completion, you might as well not do it.
